Physical Education Standard

Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Purpose of the Activity

Students participate in Fitnessgram testing to see how fit they are in five major categories. They then analyze their personal data. They determine which areas they are proficient in and which need work or are advanced. Students are given practice time, feedback, and ideas on ways to improve their scores for each test. In addition, students reflect on lifestyle choices that may improve their fitness levels or hinder them.

A Look at the Lesson

Students are shown a DVD of Fitnessgram testing protocols for curl-ups, push-ups, PACER, and sit and reach tests. Additionally, Mrs. Handy provides “look fors” for each test and models proper technique. Students correlate each test with what it measures, for example…

  • Curl-ups test – measures abdominal strength and endurance
  • Push-ups test – measures upper body strength and endurance
  • PACER test – measures cardiovascular endurance
  • Sit and Reach – measures hamstring flexibility
  • BMI – measures of the appropriateness of a students weight relative to their height

At the completion of all Fitnessgram tests students receive their data. They analyze their data and decide what goals they may need to set for themselves. Students are given feedback on each test and can use it to improve their scores.
